If the lump is near a joint, it may restrict your range of motion. In HO, you develop a bony, painful lump underneath your skin. Often, people get HO after an injury or major surgery. A 24-hour urine sample will be collected from adults who are able and willing in children and in those not able or unwilling to provide a 24-hour urine, a spot urine will be collected. Heterotopic ossification (HO) occurs when bone tissue develops in your soft tissues.Laboratory studies will be performed in all patients.As the exostosis develops, it can cause hearing loss. A urine pregnancy test will be done in all females of childbearing potential. The new bone growth occurs along the part of the ear canal leading to the eardrum.Photos of the affected area(s) will be taken, however, this is optional.The height, weight, body mass index and Tanner stage measurements will be recorded during this visit.
